"Exploration of Chilean Roots"
by JACQUELINE DUTY
This art exhibit is a journey that takes place as the artist travels to her mother’s place of birth. It begins in Santiago, Chile and continues to explore her family heritage through Puerto Montt, Puerto Varas, Hornopiren, Los Lagos Region, Valparaiso and Viña del Mar.
The artist had a dream in 2017. She painted the visions from this dream on an acrylic painting on New Year's Eve 2018.
In September 2022, she traveled for the first time to Chile. Her trip began with a terrifying flight to Miami. She found herself flying through Hurricane Ian as passengers screamed in fear. The plane landed safely and she boarded the next flight to Santiago, Chile as it was one of the final flights to leave before everything was shut down from the hurricane.
The journey through Chile began in Santiago as she walked through the streets her mother grew up on. Many stories from her childhood came alive as she explored the beautiful architecture. After several days exploring the beauty of the city and the mountains, she boarded a plane to Puerto Montt. Driving south, she boarded a ferry traveling through the Los Lagos Region to make her way towards Hornopiren. The picture is a combined image of her time on the ferry towards Hornopiren and her travels coming back through Puerto Varas. What happened in between those two pictures changed her life forever.
